'Islam-kant (''Abd al-Nur-kant Islam /the word ‘k’ant’ in Chechens means a son/boy'') is a Chechnya-born Dutch abstract painter. He was born in Grozny, the capital of The Chechen-Ingush Republic, USSR, in 1967.
In 1994 he graduated from The Dagestan State Medical University, Russia. A couple of months later, in December 1994, The First Chechen War broke out. He worked as a doctor first in the Military Hospital, and then in the basement of The Presidential Palace and later in different field hospitals, treating wounded soldiers and civilians.
In 1999 Islam-k’ant was arrested in Moscow on false charges. He spent several months in a famous prison Butirka. After his release, he left Russia.
In the year 2000, Islam-kant was granted political asylum in The Netherlands.
In 2010 - he graduated from where he completed his medical study.
In 2017, he specialized in anesthesiology and pain medicine at Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam. The same year Islam-kant created his first series of artwork called "Emotions," in which he explored human emotions through animal archetypes.
The next serie he produced called "Remasterig. Visualisation. Ulysses." The series was inspired by James Joyce's book "Ulysses". He researched subconscious associations between the novel's text and colors.
During his time at university, he completed an internship at one of a psychiatric hospital in Den Haag where he gained valuable insights into psychiatric disorders and patient care. These impressions influenced his subsequent series of works, which is titled ‘Text book: Psychiatry’ . This series present psychiatric diseases in pictures. islam-kant’s paintings often explore the themes of war, displacement, medicine, and identity, drawing on his personal experiences and emotions.
